🚢 What is Battleship?

Battleship is a team-based review game where students answer questions to earn the opportunity to fire shots at the opposing team's fleet.

The goal is simple: sink all five of the opposing team's ships!

⚓ Getting Started

Load a lesson pack, create one, or start a demo game.
Divide the class into two teams. One team becomes Team Blue and the other becomes Team Red.
The teams take turns answering questions and attacking the opposing team's board.

Teacher tip: You can use Battleship as a review activity after teaching vocabulary, grammar, expressions, or other lesson content. The questions can be adapted to match the lesson being reviewed.

🎮 How to Play

The current team chooses a numbered question card.
A student or team answers the question.
If the answer is correct, the team receives 1–5 shots.
The team uses its shots to choose squares on the opposing team's Battleship board.
Each selected square reveals whether the team has found part of an enemy ship.
After the team's shots have been used, the turn moves to the other team.

Important: The number of shots a team receives si random and does not depend on the question. A correct answer can give the team anywhere from 1 to 5 shots.

🎯 Questions and Shots

Answering questions is the key to getting opportunities to attack the opposing fleet.

Earn Your Missils

A correct answer rewards the team with 1–5 shots.

More shots give the team more opportunities to search the opposing team's board and find ships.

🗺️ The Battleship Board

Each team has a Battleship board containing hidden ships. The opposing team does not know where the ships are located.

When a team earns shots, they choose squares on the opponent's board to try to locate and destroy their ships.

Choose a square to fire a shot at the opposing fleet.

🚢 The Fleet

Each team has five ships hidden on its board. Teams must search the opposing board and hit the ships to destroy them.

Finding Ships

A shot is used by selecting a square on the opposing team's board. The result of the shot is revealed by the game.

Sinking Ships

Teams continue answering questions and using their shots until all five ships belonging to one team have been sunk.

🏆 How to Win

Battleship is not won simply by answering the most questions. Teams must use their earned shots effectively to locate the opposing fleet.

The game ends when one team has successfully sunk all five enemy ships. That team is the winner!

🧠 Strategy

Battleship combines English review with a little strategy and luck. Teams need to think carefully about where to use their shots.

A correct answer gives your team an opportunity to attack.
More shots mean more opportunities to search for ships.
Teams should think carefully about which squares to choose.
Even a team that is behind can make a comeback by finding and sinking several enemy ships.

Every question can lead to another attack, so keep answering correctly and keep searching for the enemy fleet!

👩‍🏫 Tips for Teachers

Use the game after teaching vocabulary or grammar to give students an engaging review activity.
Require a correct answer before allowing the team to receive its shots.
For speaking practice, require students to answer using a complete sentence.
Let teammates discuss their answers before responding.
Encourage students to communicate and make decisions together when choosing where to fire.
Use the number of shots as an additional reward for students who give strong answers.
